We went through all 152 MTD apps on HMRC’s list. Here’s what we found

Forty per cent can’t do your year-end return, free rarely means complete, and half work with spreadsheets. What HMRC’s software list tells you before you choose.

HMRC doesn’t make its own app for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Instead it keeps a list of software that has passed its checks, and you have to use something on that list. We went through every product on it, as published on 4 October 2026. There are 152.

The numbers

  • 152 products recognised by HMRC

  • 92 can send your final declaration; 60 can’t

  • 37 have a free version; 24 of those can also send the final declaration

  • 76 work with spreadsheets as bridging software

  • 128 support UK property income; 14 support property income only

  • 77 support overseas property income

  • 7 come from banks or payment providers

  • 3 are available in Welsh

1. Forty per cent can’t do your year-end return

This is the one to check first. 60 of the 152 products can send quarterly updates but not the final declaration, which replaces your Self Assessment tax return. If you choose one of these, you’ll need a second product, or an accountant, at the end of the year. Our directory marks each product as either ‘Updates and tax return’ or ‘Quarterly updates only’.

2. Free is common. Free and complete is not

37 products have a free version, which sounds generous. But only 24 of those can also send the final declaration. Free versions often limit the number of transactions, income sources or features, so read what’s included before you commit a year of records to one. More in our guide to free MTD software.

3. Spreadsheets aren’t dead

Half the list, 76 products, can work as bridging software: you keep your records in Excel or Google Sheets and the software sends the figures to HMRC. 23 of those do nothing else, so they suit people who are happy with their spreadsheet and just need the link. See bridging software explained.

4. Landlords have more choice than they think

128 products support UK property income, and 14 support property income only, so they’re aimed squarely at landlords. If you let property abroad, the list is shorter: 77 support overseas property income. More in MTD for overseas property.

5. Your bank might already have it

Seven products come from banks and payment providers, including Lloyds Bank, Monzo, Starling, Tide and SumUp, and versions offered through NatWest, RBS, Mettle and HSBC. If you already have a business account with one of them, check what it includes before paying for something separate.

6. Some are built for one kind of work

A handful are made for particular jobs: nine for tradespeople, one for childminders, two for farmers and one for self-employed healthcare workers. You don’t need a specialist product, but if one fits your work it may save time. See our guides for tradespeople, childminders and farmers.

How to use this when you choose

  1. Check it supports every income source you have: self-employment, UK property, overseas property

  2. Check it can send the final declaration, or plan how you’ll do that part

  3. If it’s free, check what the free version limits

  4. If you use spreadsheets, decide whether you want bridging or a full switch

  5. Try it with a month of real transactions before your first deadline

Our MTD software directory lists all 152 in alphabetical order, with filters for each of the points above and a link to each product’s HMRC listing.

Being on HMRC’s list means a product can connect to HMRC. It isn’t an endorsement by HMRC, and this isn’t a recommendation from us either. The list changes as products are added and removed, and we update our directory to match.
