Can I change MTD software during the tax year?

How to switch Making Tax Digital software, when it’s easiest, and what to do with your existing digital records.

Quick answer

Yes, you can change software at any time, though it’s easier at the end of the tax year. If you switch during the year, you need to import your digital records for the current year into the new software, or recreate them there. You can also use different software for different income sources.

Key facts

  • You can switch at any time

  • The end of the tax year is the easiest point

  • Import or recreate the current year’s records

  • Keep old records for at least 5 years

Switching mid-year

  1. Export your records from the old software.

  2. Import them into the new software, or recreate them.

  3. Connect the new software to HMRC.

  4. If you used bridging software, link the new one and remove the old link.

Your existing updates

Quarterly updates are cumulative from the start of the year, so the next update from your new software needs to cover the whole year so far. That’s why bringing all the year’s records across matters.

Keep your old records

You must still keep digital records for at least 5 years from the submission deadline for each tax year, even if you stop paying for the old software. Export them before you cancel.
